Major factory fire in Korea could delay Samsung Galaxy S5 April 11 launch
A major fire at a printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing unit in
Korea could end up delaying the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5
worldwide. The factory in question was one of many contracted by the
Korean smartphone giants to manufacture PCBs for the upcoming and
much-anticipated Galaxy S5.
As a result, the launch of the Galaxy S5, slated to happen on April 11 in most countries worldwide, might have to be pushed back. Based on an Asia News Agency report, SamMobile says the inferno began early Sunday morning, and while the firefighting teams were called immediately, it took them over 6 hours to extinguish the blaze. A total of 287 firefighters and 80 vehicles were on scene to control the fire that could have damaged equipment and components worth over $1 billion.
After the fire, Samsung released a statement saying that it was sourcing PCBs from multiple locations for the Galaxy S5, as is the industry norm. However, the fire could disrupt the production schedule of the Galaxy S5, even though it is likely to not be impacted by a huge margin.
Another fallout of the fire could be that the S5 is delayed in certain markets, but it is more likely that Samsung will enter markets with less stock and then wait as the supply chain chinks are ironed out for a full-throttle push.
